Jack T. Marlowe

an everyday dirge

i greet
each day
with a
façade
of drift-
wood
stupor
keeping
a face
more real
hidden
inside:
a broken
clock
watching
the hours
march
past, the
second-
hand
stare of
Beethoven's
alabaster
eyes
heroic
even
amidst
the idiot
masses
a poppy
in the
battlefield
a pigeon
perched on
razor wire
smoking
Lorca's
last
cigarette
the
falling
ash
iconic
the taste
of spent
lead
sacrificial
beneath an
unforgiving
bastard
sky

after hours

closing time
is now long
past, but
the hungry
ghosts are
wild awake
and on
the move

our dark
appetites
gnawing
at the void

as night
holds half
the earth
in its jaws

the stars
a gleaming
mouthful
of gold
teeth

only
slightly
less
tacky

reflected
in our
gin-fed
eyes
